This 1.5-hour webinar provides the essentials for ethically and legally navigating distance therapy services. The webinar includes:

  • The Six Keys to providing distance therapy ethically & legal
  • Clarification regarding practicing across state lines: When it's legal and when it's not
  • Explanation of important, often misunderstood issues in distance therapy.
  • Provides clinical vignettes to illustrate real-world dilemmas in distance therapy

Additionally, participants will receive additional valuable resources and links for use beyond the day of the webinar.


Learning Objectives    

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the Six Keys to providing ethical and legal distance therapy services.
  • Describe the unique ethical and legal challenges that can occur when using distance therapy. 
  • Determine and practice ethical and legal courses of action for vignettes involving distance therapy-related situations.
Target Audience

This program is open to all KAPA members and other interested mental health professionals who are not members. The content of this presentation is appropriate for mental health professionals educated at the graduate level in psychology, psychiatry, or other mental health related disciplines, as well as graduate students in a mental health related discipline.

Instructional Level 

The material will be appropriate to intermediate levels of practice and knowledge.

Continuing Education

This program - when attended in its entirety - is available for 1.5 Type I continuing education credits. With full attendance and completion of a Program Evaluation and Learning Assessment, a certificate will be issued. Partial credit will not be awarded. Participant's attendance will be verified via their Zoom login name and sign in/sign off time. Please assure that you are identifiable by your Zoom login name.

American Psychological Association Approval Statement

The Knoxville Area Psychological Association (KAPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for Psychologists. KAPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content. 

There is no commercial support for this program, nor are there any relationships between the CE Sponsor, presenting organization, program content, research, grants, or other funding sources that could reasonably be construed as conflicts of interest. During the program, the validity/utility of the content and risk/limitations of there approaches discussed will be addressed.

Registration Fees and Policies

If you are a member of KAPA, then this program is free of charge. If you are not a member of KAPA and you do not want CE credit, then this program is free of charge. Non-members wanting CE credits will be charged $20.

Speaker Information

Terry Casey, PhD, is a Licensed Psychologist, Health Service Provider with over 30 years of professional experience in private practice, outpatient, residential, hospital, community mental health, and educational settings. He is in private practice in Franklin, Tennessee and divides his time providing direct services to clients, consulting with counseling and mental health professionals and organizations, providing clinical supervision, and conducting training. He is also an adjunct faculty member in Lipscomb University's CACREP-accredited graduate program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling where he has taught Ethics and Professional Issues in Counseling and other courses since 2007. Dr. Casey has also been a regular guest lecturer in Trevecca University's PhD program in Clinical Counseling. He also served for several years as the Chair of the Ethics Committee for the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors' Association and served in an advisory capacity for graduate counseling programs at two universities. Dr. Casey served for 17 years as the Director of Counseling & Psychological Services for a non-profit agency with over thirty counselors at over a dozen locations. Dr. Casey has conducted numerous ethics trainings for counseling agencies, professional organizations, and national and state conferences.
