A Primer on Psychiatric Medication: How to better help our patients by working with psychiatric providers
Laurie Williams, PhD
Williams Psychology Corporation
Julia Wood, MD
Knoxville Psychiatry
Summary:
Dr. Williams will discuss the ways in which a referral to a psychiatric provider will be most effective. She will highlight the elements of a useful referral letter, focusing on the information that will be most helpful to the potential prescriber. She will discuss ways to prepare a patient for a psychiatric consultation and how to educate them on ways to use the upcoming appointment most effectively. She will highlight ways in which a psychologist may inadvertently make the prescriber's job more difficult, and ways to collaborate after a treatment relationship is established with the psychiatrist.
Dr. Wood will provide an overview of psychiatric medication for the major psychiatric disorders with a focus on evidence based treatments. She will review both older and newer medications and explain the importance of understanding mechanisms of action in order to help patients monitor for side effects of treatment.
