Professional Impairment in the Practice of Psychology

    Cognitive Impairment:

What can we learn from developments in fitness

for duty evaluations of late career physicians?

    Ciaran Considine, Ph.D., ABPP-CN

    Associate Profession, Clinical Neurology

    Vanderbilt University Medical Center

    Summary:

This presentation examines the emerging issue of cognitive impairment in late-career psychologists by analyzing developments in physician fitness-for-duty evaluations. Participants will explore the prevalence of age-related cognitive decline in healthcare professionals, review various screening and evaluation approaches, and examine obstacles to implementation including age discrimination concerns and methodological challenges. The session will present a tiered proposal for addressing professional impairment in psychology, ranging from proactive brain health screening to potential licensing board requirements, while addressing diversity considerations and ethical implications.

    Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

      • analyze the current evidence base for age-related cognitive decline in healthcare professionals and evaluate the effectiveness of various screening approaches used in physician fitness-for-duty evaluations,
      • compare different cognitive assessment methodologies (screening tools vs. comprehensive neuropsychological batteries) and differentiate their advantages and limitations for identifying professional impairment, and
      • propose evidence-based strategies for implementing cognitive screening programs in psychology practice, including addressing diversity considerations and ethical concerns related to age discrimination.

This program is open to all KAPA members and other interested mental health professionals who are not members.
